Since its inception, the novel has been the primary literary form for reflecting women’s lives. As a result, female writers have significantly capitalized on it to explore various facets of their ideas and experiences. In contemporary times, given the crucial role of women in the progress and development of their societies, it is more apparent than ever to focus on women’s position and status and to address their concerns and issues through reading Persian novels. Shahrnush Parsipur (1945) is one of the successful and prolific writers in the realm of fiction. She has authored most of her works, including The Dog and the Long Winter (1974) and Touba and the Meaning of Night (1989), in which women are the central figures. These novels exemplify the living conditions of Iranian women during the Qajar, Constitutional, and Pahlavi periods. This study aims to portray the society, its prevailing culture, societal attitudes toward women, and the ways in which society interacts with them, ultimately exploring the potential transformation of their circumstances by focusing on the thoughts, concerns, and actions of female characters in these two novels. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of various capitals and fields, the study will examine not only fields in which female characters are present, but also the extent to which women benefit from various capitals in these fields. The study has demonstrated that women did not stop their efforts to alter society’s outlook toward them as well as to find their own identity despite limitations and pressures of their patriarchal society. To improve their status, they have kept their effort with zero capital and at times with negative capital, such as superstition, habitus, such as gossipmongering, and its acceptance. These efforts have been effective and disappointing sometimes.
