Confessional literature is a literary genre that explicitly articulates the author’s thoughts and the hidden details of their personal life and inner world. Since many human actions and reactions are influenced by prevailing social events and traditions, confessions not only reflect an individual’s thoughts and inner experiences but also reveal the social conditions and hidden ideologies of the society in which the confessor lives, thereby providing a means of understanding the author’s society. This article examines the components of confessional style and the representation of social issues related to women and family in Shahla Zarlaki’s Eteraf-Baz. Using a descriptive-analytical approach based on the text of Eteraf-Baz, the authors seek to answer the following questions: Which components of confessional literature can be identified in Zarlaki’s confessional autobiography? And how does Zarlaki, by moving beyond certain social restrictions, articulate her turbulent self and her rebellious and resilient spirit, while also revealing her feminine sensitivity and tenderness? The findings show that, in her confessional autobiography, Zarlaki employs memoir and storytelling techniques and draws on fundamental components of confessional literature, including establishing connections with the historical context and recounting events; inward reflection and continuous evaluation of the self; revealing hidden aspects of life; articulating her lived experiences and cultural traditions; reflecting the influence of time and place on the formation of the narrator’s identity; and exploring the body as a means of attaining self-knowledge. Through an intimate language, attention to detail, an interrogative structure, and the use of a first-person point of view, she presents her confessions from childhood to the age of eighteen, representing social issues concerning women, including femininity; personal, familial, and cultural factors that cause suffering and harassment for women in society; attention to historical background and family origins; the absence of an emotional relationship between spouses; and imposed silence.
