Codification of Plant Symbols in Seventy Gravestones: A Pattern for Discovering Socio-political Events

Abstract
Seventy Gravestones is Yadollah Royaee’s most important work and one of the ten significant Persian avant-garde poems of the past three decades. By creating a multiple, intertextual, and labyrinthine network of relationships and hidden references, the poet in his book designates gravestones for the set of poets, literary scholars, politicians, and other personages. Among tombstones, some are familiar to readers, such as those of Bayazid and Hasank, while others are shrouded in mystery, and it is unclear to whom they have been written, like those of Fatemeh and Talaye. Still, some gravestone names are abstract, like Seul and Runaway. Knowing the owner of the gravestone will significantly influence the readers’ grasp of the poetry. Also, understanding the poetry’s verbal network and intertextual relations to a large extent hinges on identifying the gravestone owners. The book is significant because it directly relates to Iran’s contemporary oral history, narrating the lives of contemporary personages and socio-political events in the form of Hajm (free verse) poetry. For the first time in this article, the author offers an approach to unveil the vague and hidden names in Seventy Gravestones. He contends that the pattern of plant symbolisation is repeatable and applicable for analysing the poems in Seventy Gravestones. More importantly, the author believes that his approach enables the discovery of unknown personalities and sociopolitical incidents because in this book, there is a labyrinthine network of the names of plants, trees, and flowers related to the book’s characters and important contemporary historical issues.
